History Repeating Itself? Mayflower Delivers After Huge Set-Back. 61306 on 22June 2024
HAVE YOU SPOTTED THE MISTAKE??
Here are two clips of 61306 (not 31306!) Mayflower working hard as opposed to running fast as in my last upload.
The diesel hauling the train on the down leg suffered an air leak at Westbury and a back up had to take over resulting in a 71 mins delay. This increased to 100 minutes down leaving Taunton which was a huge set-back even for passengers with as much interest in dining as the trip on this Saphos tour.
High above Broadsands beach the B1 is taking more than her fair share of the load as she appears through the high wind blown grass of the hayfield ready to be cut by my neighbouring farmer who kindly allows me to film from this spot, crossing Broadsands...

Here are two shots of ex - L.N.E.R. B1 Mayflower, one at her maximum allowed speed of 75m.p.h. as she heads Steam Dreams' excursion to Kingswear. The down leg is captured on the 100m.p.h. stretch at Powderham where she looks and sounds stunning racing at full speed through the riverside fields, exciting the grazing heffers as she rushes past. The return is captured on the lower reaches of the T...

The return leg of this two day tour in celebration of the 1904 unofficial breaking of the 100m.p.h. barrier by City of Truro promised so much after her masterful display over the Westcountry banks on Day 1 but alas it was not to be as Clun Castle tackles the 1 in 42 of Hemerdon Bank. Arriving more than 2 hours early at this iconic location was needed just to park the car and having set up camer...

It is 10 years since this Vintage Trains Tour ran over the Devon Banks to Plymouth, a celebration of a celebration of an historical event i.e. the re-run of the 1964 1Z48 run which commemorated the unofficial 102.4 m.p.h. record set by City of Truro in 1904. The tour of 2014 was headed by 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and turned out to be the last time an ex-G.W.R. Castle graced these hills; a lo...

The first day of mainline steam in the far Southwest turned out to be a frantic one with the 60 m.p.h. schedule being easily beaten on the outward by up to 26 minutes and the homeward by up to 50 minutes and as a consequence I was alone at most locations. Having negotiated the Teign Estuary mud to find a solid sandbank I still had plenty of time to set up according to a check on progress 10 min...

Those of a certain vintage and musical persuasion will quite understand my use of this title when describing the thrill of “live” performance. Scheduled a...

Saturday April 13th sees the start of the 2024 edition of the Railway Touring Company’s “Great Britain XVI” steam rail tour of the U.K. concluding on Sunday 21st. Now firmly established as an annual event (with a couple of exceptions), this year’s tour does not include the far Southwest in its itinerary. With that in mind, I thought it would be interesting to compile a history of visits to the ...

The 16th August 2015 turned out to be a long shift for the crew of 60009 Union of South Africa and as documented in this compilation, a steam locomotive failing a long way from base can take a long time to repair even when excellent facilities are within easy reach and the problem straightforward. Hauling the Royal Duchy away from Taunton everything seemed fine as speed increased through Allerf...
Four Double-Headed, Full-Throttle Climbs of Hemerdon Bank
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Of all the imfamous Devon Banks, the 2 mile climb at 1 in 42 of Hemerdon Bank was and still is the most feared climb for a steam locomotive crew. When single-headed, the regulator has to be used carefully as loss of adhesion, the biggest risk, can bring your train to a standstill more easily than the risk of low boiler pressure. This usually ends up in what is known as "A Slog" as I demonstrate...

It's almost like this has been normal for 30 years and it only pushes when it needs to, or something.

I've seen the exact same Steam Dreams Railtour, one month ago (11th May 2024), at Chester Station. The Class 47 at the rear was in Intercity Swallow livery, and the steam engine upfront was a different LNER steamy: A4 Sir Nigel Gresley. There's a video on my channel, Sir Nigel Gresley with Saphos Steam Dreams Railtour & Friends, which is calling your name.

Hi and thank you for your kind feedback and for your info on max permitted speed. I much admit that I thought that it was well over 60 at Powderham, so that explains it! Description now corrected. Many thanks again. Best regards, Alan

Hi, I am sorry you got this mischievous reply, a slightly tipsy friend had my phone and was watching one of the videos. You are right, the diesel could have assisted sooner but it relies on the steam crew to request it and they obviously didn't until it was almost too late! Thank you for your valued question and apologies once again. Kind regards, Alan

Hello Brian and thank you for your question. This was an unassisted train so when the train stalled the support diesel had to travel from Plymouth and attach to the rear in order to release the brakes. Regards, Alan

Brookwood Surrey in the early 1960's was the place to be. No speed limits so the Atlantic Coast express with a well maintained Merchant Navy routinely topped 100 mph.
